Way back in 2012 we met up with some winemaker friends and pondered the lack of varietal grape diversity in Northern California. The Crush Report logged only seven percent of acreage that year planted to anything other than the “Big Eight” grapes. It was decided that something needed doing.
They got to work sourcing and planting and finding. We got to work organizing, gathering information, and throwing a huge party.
Fast forward to today and you’ll see those same winemakers, and many, many more, working tirelessly to bring new grape varieties to light in California. It isn’t easy. There aren’t that many land owners willing to replant for a “weird grape.” And those who have, well, their fruit already has well established value… for those who take care, and those who know.
We threw a heck of an annual tasting party for 7 years straight: Seven Percent Solution. Each year the tasting grew, in quality of winemaking, and quantity of varietal offerings. We tasted between 50 – 70 grape varieties each year, all produced in California, and showcased the Rock Stars and Ragtag Rebels of this sliver of the industry… a sliver which is slowly but permanently changing the perception and physical landscape of California Wine.
If you’d REALLY like to dig into these wines, and this movement, and get to know who’s who in this sliver, SIGN UP for our REBEL GRAPE SOCIETY club. You’re welcome.
