A DIFFERENT TAKE ON TUSCAN TRADITION

Tuscany steals the spotlight when it comes to the first thing Americans think of when they picture Italy. A trove of riches when it comes to history and culture to be had, and of course, some of the most famous wine regions, hands down. At the center of Tuscany’s sea of Sangiovese lies Chianti, but if you travel around the legendary appellation’s perimeter therein lie fun treasures to discover and learn about as well.

Brunello, of course, has an impenetrable following, but nearby Vino Nobile di Montepulciano deserves even more attention. Especially for those who prefer more classically styled wines. Perhaps it’s a branding issue?

Montepulciano the town, not the grape (the grape is Prugnolo Gentile, which is actually also Sangiovese…) deserves a spotlight.

Carmignano should also be way higher up in wine lovers’ minds, especially all those who throw down the big bucks for ‘Super Tuscans.’ The use of french varieties like Cab and Cab Franc date back far further here AND they still feature great Sangiovese in their wines as opposed to their flashy southern counterparts.

Lastly, the white wine landscape in this region is all but non-existent (no such thing as Sangiovese Bianco, I suppose) but there are certainly those holding true to the regions-old traditions of complex skin macerated whites, which are now carving out a new category in the cutting edge restaurant scene of Florence.
