CHARDONNAY [shahr-den-ney] + PINOT NERO [pee-no NEH-roh]
Clearly outside the realm of native Italian varietals, yet these two classic Champagne grapes are no strangers to this region that has only recently been recognized for great wines. In the early 1900’s, Giulio Ferrari planted the first french cuttings in Trento and the family has been the leader in production here to this day.
With the long history of Franciacorta growing these French varietals and producing their well known sparkling wine, the producers in Trentodoc followed suit with tradition but are now carving their own path. There are a small number of great local varieties native to the area, but Chardonnay and Pinot have yet to be outclassed anywhere when it comes to sparkling production.
